Sea World San Antonio Welcomes New Killer Whale!

Sea World San Antonio has a new Shamu.

Look out Shamu, you've got competition!  Sea World San Antonio announced the birth of a new killer whale calf by Takara, an 18 year old Orca.  My wife can't get enough of Sea World (map), but I have yet to visit (for some reason, I've been out of town every time we've had visitors that she went there with), but with an announcement like this, I feel a certain pride in San Antonio and the Sea World staff.  Breeding any large animal in captivity is typically not an easy feat, but Sea World has been rather successful in their efforts with killer whales, which are truly magnificent to watch (I've seen them in San Diego).  Amazing intelligence, agility, and understanding of their surroundings, it should be interesting to watch the new calf grow up through the years.

Pere - I'm hoping they'll release some photos soon, but so far I haven't seen anything.

Take a day off. Go to Sea World with your wife, and have a whale of a time Matt!

Matt - What a great picture of the newest killer whale!  It's funny how sometimes we don't get to the wonderful attractions in our own backyard.

I'll be heading to San Diego in February for a long overdue visit to grandkids there, as well as the East Bay area further north. Sea World is always a good time. You'll share photos of the new baby when you can, right?

Having grown up in So. Cal. I have seen generations of Shamu's. This one has to be Shamu the 20th! (or maybe higher!)

Just to make sure everyone knows - that is not a photo of the new calf.  It's from a Flickr search and I didn't take it.  Don't want anyone to feel mislead.

Mark - Although I don't know how many total killer whales they've had come through the three Sea Worlds, I can tell you that this calf is the 26th born to in captivity by a Sea World based Orca.

Just stopped by to let you, and anyone reading this, know that there's an ActiveRain Super Bowl Party going on. Stop by if you have a chance.
