San Antonio's Rockstar Turned Realtor®: Blurry vision at ActiveRain: Do I need glasses?

Blurry vision at ActiveRain: Do I need glasses?

Tegley ???Tegley ???

I love CAPTCHA codes.  I found this one this morning while here on ActiveRain and had to laugh.  I wrote my message, started to type the letters from the CAPTCHA and then realized I had absolutely no clue what the second word was.  I think there's an "m" and a "y" at the end there, but that's about all I could see (or guess).  In addition to the usual non-sensical words that appear, I've found many instances where the words were more like an ink blot test.

Did you know?

Although it seems like it would be fairly obvious, I've seen people do the "I could've had a V8" head smack when they realized what the two symbols to the right of the text box were there for.

Headphones - Click this icon and you'll be played an audio version of the text.  This is often helpful when the words apear blurry and you can't read them, but it's also useful for making websites accessible to all.  If you're blind, you can't read a CAPTCHA and the text-to-voice software that you would use to "view" websites would not be able to read the it's an image file.

Circular Arrow - You can use this button to refresh the words if they are unreadable or look like you've been out on a bender.  One note of advice, every site is different with their refresh button, if you've entered any text (comments, email, etc.) I highly suggest you copy what you just wrote and then click the refresh button.  I've lost some great text over the years when the whole page reloaded instead of just the graphic.  In the case of ActiveRain's contact pages (where this was taken from), the button only refreshes the graphic (9 times out 10 you'll find this to be the case, but it's that one time that will make your blood boil).

Sometimes it takes a try or two to get it write and I have resorted to the audio version.

LOL!  So true!  With time, these codes have improved.  Many of them, are not even words.  So, trying to figure out what they should be, isn't always, what they are:)  Thanks for the update on the symbols!

Holy cow Matt, thanks for the explanation.  I sometimes wonder if my morning caffeine hasn't kicked in or if the wine with dinner the previous night was a little too potent.  I did NOT know about the audio.  (You'd think I could have just clicked and tried it, eh?)  The only thing bugging me lately on AR is the slow, slow, slow page load - yuk.

Never knew what either symbol was for. Thanks Matt. Sometimes it takes a couple tries to correctly decode the Captcha words.

It ALWAYS takes me 2-3 trys before I can get those things right.  Just when I think I have it figured out...I run out of time and a new one pops up! :)

I can never see those things and I never had any idea that you could listen to the codes. Thanks for that info.

That's pretty funny, but I can identify.  I usually draft my posts and comments in ScribeFire, then copy them to the box.  That way if it gets lost on AR for any reason, I can simply re-paste it.  As a side effect of using ScribeFire, I can change and resize my fonts and change colors. But the best part is being able to save a post until I'm sure it has posted. Then I can erase it from the ScribeFire box.

Some of those are impossible!  So glad you you wrote this post.  Those codes are ridiculous and on some sites you lose your comment or info if you don't type it correctly the first time.  Like a penalty.

Matt - this is funny; here is the message I got when i tried to type in the graphic the first time below my comment:

You did not correctly enter the text of the graphic displayed. Please try again.

Anyway, I learned something today....I had no idea you could listen to the graphic!

Sometimes they look blurry, but if I enlarge the whole screen on a touch screen, or just CTRL + on any computer, it is readable.  But I save my comment, just in case - I never remember exactly what I just said.

And don't you know, it would be a long comment that I lost!

I've had to use that several times, didn't know what the audio was, but used the other one to get a clearer read. So now I know I'm not the only blind one.

What did this say!!!!!  did you do the circular thing or audio?...  I read the whole post hoping for the answer to the mystery of What does that say....

That's why I like the audio to see if I can then see what it says it says.

Hi Matt - The incomprehensible captcha phrase portions also help to keep away the spammers.  Perhaps ActiveRain should find a different code base for their captcha phrase routines.

Thanks for a great explanation. I hadn't used the speakers but have used (several times) the refresh.

Thanks for that info.  Sometimes I wonder if the CAPTCHA people that think of these words are sitting back laughing at us and making bets on who's word would be refreshed and whose word will make it.
