Tegley ???
I love CAPTCHA codes. I found this one this morning while here on ActiveRain and had to laugh. I wrote my message, started to type the letters from the CAPTCHA and then realized I had absolutely no clue what the second word was. I think there's an "m" and a "y" at the end there, but that's about all I could see (or guess). In addition to the usual non-sensical words that appear, I've found many instances where the words were more like an ink blot test.
Did you know?
Although it seems like it would be fairly obvious, I've seen people do the "I could've had a V8" head smack when they realized what the two symbols to the right of the text box were there for.
Headphones - Click this icon and you'll be played an audio version of the text. This is often helpful when the words apear blurry and you can't read them, but it's also useful for making websites accessible to all. If you're blind, you can't read a CAPTCHA and the text-to-voice software that you would use to "view" websites would not be able to read the text...as it's an image file.
Circular Arrow - You can use this button to refresh the words if they are unreadable or look like you've been out on a bender. One note of advice, every site is different with their refresh button, if you've entered any text (comments, email, etc.) I highly suggest you copy what you just wrote and then click the refresh button. I've lost some great text over the years when the whole page reloaded instead of just the graphic. In the case of ActiveRain's contact pages (where this was taken from), the button only refreshes the graphic (9 times out 10 you'll find this to be the case, but it's that one time that will make your blood boil).

Sometimes it takes a try or two to get it write and I have resorted to the audio version.
Matt,
LOL! So true! With time, these codes have improved. Many of them, are not even words. So, trying to figure out what they should be, isn't always, what they are:) Thanks for the update on the symbols!
Holy cow Matt, thanks for the explanation. I sometimes wonder if my morning caffeine hasn't kicked in or if the wine with dinner the previous night was a little too potent. I did NOT know about the audio. (You'd think I could have just clicked and tried it, eh?) The only thing bugging me lately on AR is the slow, slow, slow page load - yuk.
Never knew what either symbol was for. Thanks Matt. Sometimes it takes a couple tries to correctly decode the Captcha words.
Matt, went to send a message off the other day and it me 9 times... YEP 9 TRIES to get the code right..... I love that refresh button!!!
i have used the "gimme a new captcha code, or I KEEL you" button many times.
Learned something new today - and I have lost info due to writing them wrong.
blood boil...boy have I been there! I have learned to copy/paste all the time here and elsewhere!

You are the guy with the info. I didn't know what those symbols meant. Thanks
so simple now that you have shed light on it.......Thanks!
It ALWAYS takes me 2-3 trys before I can get those things right. Just when I think I have it figured out...I run out of time and a new one pops up! :)
That's pretty funny, but I can identify. I usually draft my posts and comments in ScribeFire, then copy them to the box. That way if it gets lost on AR for any reason, I can simply re-paste it. As a side effect of using ScribeFire, I can change and resize my fonts and change colors. But the best part is being able to save a post until I'm sure it has posted. Then I can erase it from the ScribeFire box.
Good advice about copying before hitting the refresh button - learned the hard way.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who occasionally can't make heads or tails out of these things.
Some of those are impossible! So glad you you wrote this post. Those codes are ridiculous and on some sites you lose your comment or info if you don't type it correctly the first time. Like a penalty.
Google is known for some pretty rough ones too!
These things are annoying...sometimes it takes forever to get it right!
Matt - this is funny; here is the message I got when i tried to type in the graphic the first time below my comment:
You did not correctly enter the text of the graphic displayed. Please try again.
Anyway, I learned something today....I had no idea you could listen to the graphic!
Sometimes they look blurry, but if I enlarge the whole screen on a touch screen, or just CTRL + on any computer, it is readable. But I save my comment, just in case - I never remember exactly what I just said.
And don't you know, it would be a long comment that I lost!
I've had to use that several times, didn't know what the audio was, but used the other one to get a clearer read. So now I know I'm not the only blind one.
Very annoying process but very much needed for automatic postings and comments in all the sites out there.
What did this say!!!!! did you do the circular thing or audio?... I read the whole post hoping for the answer to the mystery of What does that say....
That's why I like the audio to see if I can then see what it says it says.
Okay...I have my reading glasses but now I realize I need to turn up the speakers!
Hi Matt - The incomprehensible captcha phrase portions also help to keep away the spammers. Perhaps ActiveRain should find a different code base for their captcha phrase routines.
Thanks for a great explanation. I hadn't used the speakers but have used (several times) the refresh.
Kathy
Thanks for that info. Sometimes I wonder if the CAPTCHA people that think of these words are sitting back laughing at us and making bets on who's word would be refreshed and whose word will make it.
I like to live dangerously and guess first, Matt!
I like it when my computer autofills a repeat of a captcha code...but never thought about copying the text so as not to lose it...good tip!!
Matt - Me too. I try to guess first time but in your captcha I couldn't guess that one for anything... ha... give me another one..... refresh
Glad to know that I'm not the only one having trouble with these things lately. I can barely read some of them!
Matt-I've lost true masterpieces to this demon. The second try never matches the original. Thanks for the tip.
Haha, no doubt. Every third time or so I miss it and feel foolish but they're needed... I guess.
OMG, Matt - I thought it was just me! (And the after-effect of the seventies. :)
Thanks Matt! I didn't know what the headphones were for but I knew the re-fresh arrow was.
HI MATT! Oh yes - I use the circle arrow button a lot - especially because like my vision, my hearing is questionable these days! -- Gab
