San Antonio's Rockstar Turned RealtorĀ®: San Antonio Fire Danger.

San Antonio Fire Danger.

I-10 and DeZavala in San Antonio, TX burn during red flag warnings.

Red flag warning are serious business.

In my travels, I get to see a lot of interesting sights, but yesterday, it wasn't a sight I wanted to see.  I had stopped to get a drink after a long day of showings at a What-a-burger on DeZavala right off the I-10.  I went inside, got my drink, and as I went outside made a phone call.  As the call started, I noticed a small brush fire of the embankment of I-10.  I was getting ready to call 911, when the guy next to me made the call.  Within the minutes the entire area was thick with smoke, and you could see the flames spread quickly.  It was quite a sight to behold (men are always fascinated by fire).  You can see the smoke as it started to rise in the photo above.  Within minutes the San Antonio Fire Department was there along with several police cars (they had to slow down the flow of traffic on I-10 as the smoke was covering the highway).  They responded quickly and efficiently and I give them all a round of applause for that.

San Antonio is in a major drought and we need to be careful.

When a drought hits an area, it is serious business.  Yesterday's winds were whipping up fires all around the city (I smelled one nearby my home, but wasn't sure where it was located - but you could definitely tell it was close by the smell).  These fires start so innocently, but quickly turn into raging hot fires that spread fast.  I've seen the destructive effects of brush fires while I lived out in Los Angeles.  Now that San Antonio is in the middle of such a lengthy drought, we all need to take a minute and think about fire safety.  Cigarette butts out the window, unattended fires, unattended grills (with the warm weather lately, its been perfect time to get out there and smoke a nice brisket) - all of these can quickly turn into major fires.  Be careful out there San Antonio!

Brother Matt...

Wildfire is always a threat during a drought. There is a need for caution, especially with cigarettes. Droughts always make people edgy and angry too! I hope you get rain soon.

Hi Matt, I am starting to wonder if we will ever get any rain.

Matt...I hope our Winter and Spring rains continue and keep things wet here. Fire is not fun, no matter where it is!

This is something to take very seriously.  My brother in law is a fire fighter, last year on NYE he went on and on about us not doing fireworks so we decided to listen & not do them.  We let the kids do sparklers only, sure enough a small fire started in my backyard from a sparkler spark.  It's been dry for a long time now!!  It sure looked like it was going to rain today!

Matt...  better not do that rain dance around an open fire!  So tell me, how's the humidity?  Seems like  it would be down, and I can't imagine San Antonio without high humidity.

Brother Richard - I was always pretty aware of fire danger thanks to living near the Hollywood Hills.  I remember right before I left Los Angeles, there was a huige wildfire out by Simi Valley.  You could taste the smoke and all our cars had ash on them.  We were miles away, but on the freeway, you could see it off in the distance.  At night it looked incredible.

Shirley - Well we had a little taste.  Looks like today's won't be worth much according to the last report I heard.

Thom and Ray - The only fun fires are a) roasting marshmallow fires and b) cooked a giant steak fires.

Kristin - I've always been amazed at Texas rules on fireworks - I come from a state where we didn't have them.  Just color fountains and sparklers basically.  No rockets or anything like that.  Sparklers are an odd one and I can never figure out why they allow them when they ban things...those things burn pretty hot and it only takes one spark to set things off.

Randy - The humidity had been low, but its creeped back in the past few days, allowing us some cloudy mornings and a bit of rain.  Still not what we need.
